How to play Canfield Solitaire

Take a moment with Canfield Solitaire before moving to another game. Complete four suited foundations beginning at the dealt base rank and wrapping king to ace. Look at what changes after your first action. Begin with the solo mode shown on the page. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

Thirteen reserve cards, four columns, draw-three recyclable stock. Free solo play, no wagering.

Make the controls familiar

Locate the buttons and input area before beginning a long round. Use the on-screen labels to avoid an accidental restart. Make the next step deliberately.

Your goal

Complete four suited foundations beginning at the dealt base rank and wrapping king to ace. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Notice how the game responds to your input.

Step by step

  1. Build tableau runs down in alternating colours, wrapping ace to king. Reserve cards refill empty columns automatically.
  2. Select a face-up card and then the destination pile or Empty slot.
  3. Use foundations where available; full Spider or Scorpion runs clear automatically.
  4. Undo reverses a choice. New deal shuffles again.

Controls

Click or tap cards and piles. Wide tableaus scroll inside the game; use Undo, Hint and New deal where shown. Read a button’s label before selecting it. Use the visible help when you are unsure of the next input.

A useful example

With base rank 5, a foundation runs 5 through king, then ace through 4. Compare this with the rule that governs the move. Choose a deliberate next step.

Watch out for this

Random deals are not guaranteed solvable. A hint is a legal move, not a winning strategy. Take a moment to reassess the position before continuing. When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round.
